Its Official Now – Signage, Cool Floors, Fixtures and Kennels

IMG_3051wBE PREPARED to be amazed at the progress on the New Animal Services Facility. I thought that Deputy Donna went a little nuts with the photos of the barn from last week, but then well the deputies must be having a contest or something. Deputy Lisa kind of went a little more over the top with the number of pictures for this week. I can see the problem though it’s all just so exciting and elegant and elegant to look at. First off let me just say – “WE HAVE A COOL SIGN”. (Thank you to Deputy Jamie for the design. – I hope I bought enough deputy badges. – I think I need to deputize Sara at the shelter too – did you see the great pictures she posted on the EDC Animal Services Facebook page last week?IMG_3183w

So the sign went in today and the concrete was still really wet when my deputy took the picture, like just poured. Pretty good timing. The next thing to note was the Sally Port roof is up and the whole roof is on the barn now along with a lot of the doors. Fencing will be next I surmise after my plan review tonight.

Also outside they are working on all the walkways that will bring my adoring fans in for visits and to adopt future residents. Anyway really starting to look impressive out front.

IMG_3181wAnd once you go inside, oh my. Really artsy flooring inlays of dogs and cats in the entry and lobby. Since my fans don’t use litter boxes its good that the bathrooms are already looking good. And check out the washer and dryer, boy those would have been helpful during the King Fire and Animal Emergency Sheltering. IMG_3132wAnd the Veterinary Clinic area is well underway too. There are a great variety of rooms with sinks for preparing food, bathing and grooming animals and of course for the staff and volunteers.IMG_3114w Last but not least the dog kennels are being installed this week and probably next week too.

IMG_3076wThe endless hallway still looks endless from a cat’s perspective.

Please really check out the colors in the pictures they are inspiring and soothing all at the same time. My deputy said that felt incredibly positive on the way home from doing the photographs. I hope these images inspire all my fans at least as much. Anyway enjoy. BTW my Sheriff hat arrived, but I am not sure when I will get a portfolio addition wearing the hat.

Til next time MEOWZA! oh heck YIPPEEEEEE! — Sheriff Bullet.

Animal Services residents against the type of rain that that saved the day on the fire (in addition to those wonderful men and women fighting the fire), the same rain that I read we so desperately need to end the drought. With a good roof I will not have to pray for no rain to keep my friends dry. So its just good all the way around. Deputy Donna was coming to Hangtown (Sheriff Bullet you know so I like the old west connotation of the old name) to get her haircut so she was able to stop in and capture more of the roofing process. of this post.

While the King Fire was raging not much was able to go on with adoptions and such. The dogs went out to foster care and I hadn’t much dog testing to do, so I hung out got what Handsome Sleep I could with all the ruckus and tested the fish tank water more frequently – an important need with all the ash and smoke in the air from the fire.

And you just won’t believe the progress being made on the interior of the building. I’ll blog about that next time – very soon.    MEOWZA – Sheriff Bullet.

EMERGENCY SHELTERS AND BARN RAISING

With the King Fire it has been a pretty chaotic 10 days. Before I get started let me just say that my two lady friends Thumbelina and Nora featured in my last post have both been adopted. My buds Katt and Mouse are still looking for their forever homes and will be in this week’s Adopt a Pet ad in the Mountain Democrat. Most of the dogs were fostered out or moved to other shelters because of the fire.

King Fire Day 9

King Fire Day 9

With 4-5 different sheltering sites at one time or another it has taken some great team work to keep them all staffed with volunteers and supplies. Once again the Ponderosa FFA stepped up with their school Farm at the High School and with manpower from the FFA to house small livestock like sheep, goats, pigs poultry and water fowl. The Fairgrounds is staffed with South County Large Animal Rescue volunteers and El Dorado County Animal Services staff who are looking after large livestock like horses.

The Placerville Shelter site is housing dogs, cats, chinchillas, cage birds and a guinea pig. (No partridges and no pear trees or other flora) – PAWED shelter volunteers and EDCAS staff are seeing to their needs. As you all know how important my ‘Handsome Sleep’ is, I am sure you can appreciate how big an impact this has had on my nap schedule, but the poor dogs and cats that had to be moved 3 times as the fire shifted and surged and the humans caring for them had it way worse (not to mention the poor people who were evacuated). Sheltering so many dogs at the EDCAS Placerville Shelter was made possible through the loan of 8 dog show tents by HANGTOWN KENNEL CLUB – these are critical to provide shade. A local community member also lent the use of an additional building near by for cats. Thank you to all of my fans who have donated supplies and have taken laundry to do at their own homes so my friends can have clean bedding.  So I will count my self lucky as at least my home did not move through all of this.

The lobby is looking nice with lots of glass and soothing colors.

Speaking of homes, I thought you would all like some good news. Things are really going well over at my new home and this last week that barn kit you saw delivered in piles is going up. A modern ‘barn raising’. As Tim the construction guy says its been good with all the holes and bolts aligning. Its been such a quick process I have had to put 3 different deputies on the task of capturing it in photos (Thanks Barb L., Donna D. and Lisa C.) The horses will have a nice woodsy view out some of the back doors.

Inside the New Animal Services Facility glass and doors are going in and every thing is really looking spiffy. There is even a drinking fountain for my fans in the front lobby. Lots of work to keep the construction guys busy for a bit yet, but not too much.

Out front they are now grading for the dog exercise areas and other stuff. The site plan will tell you what all of it is.2014-03-17 TI Site Plan – Dogs and Barn

That especially goes for all the animal services officers, Sheriff’s officers and firefighters out there working this nasty King Fire.

SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED

Hey readers, spread the word that there are still a lot of great adult cats here at the Shelter in Placerville. Some cool dudes are available (Please get them a home as they are competition for me and as I get older I am not so into that sort of thing.) Specifically Katt & Mouse (Katt is not as “cool” or educated as I, Bullet, am but he likes to do that nifty head butt thing.).

KATT

KATT

Mouse

MOUSE

There are some of my lovely lady friends available too, and while I enjoy their company emencely, I really know that they deserve a spotlight of their own in their own forever homes and that’s hard for them to get with me soaking up all the attention around the shelter. Take a look at Thumbelina and Nora in the gallery too.

Remember some of the adult cats have been sponsored by Facebook Angels and all cats over 1 year of age are eligible for the PAWED senior cat discount. Even the administrators at the county have stepped up and kittens are ½ off right now. The county has an information page on this and on fostering kittens. So if your not ready to commit to a forever home how about doing a test drive by fostering. http://www.edcgov.us/Government/PublicHealth/Press_Releases/2014/The_Cat_s_Meow.aspx

While we have a lot of cats and kittens here at the Placerville Shelter I am doing such a great job of testing and approving all the canines that they are going like hot cakes. My photography deputies are not even able to keep up with the cool white back drop photos at times. Anyway just check out Friday Mountain Democrat Adopt a Pet Page, the EDC Animal Services Facebook page, the PAWED Facebook page or the shelter adoption website.

Over at the New EDC Westslope Animal Services Facility things are still moving apace. The barn kit arrived today as projected and I deputized another photographer so I could get you some images of it (Thanks to my new deputy Barb L.) You can see as she says “Some Assembly Required” is an understatement. I have tasked a couple of my deputies with capturing the process so I can share it with you in the next couple of weeks.

Barn Foundation

The interior of the facility is still scheduled for completion this month. The dog kennels are getting what looks like a textured resin coating on the floors. My deputy related to me that this stuff and the glue that they use on the linoleum is pretty strong smelling stuff. Not quite the same as a skunked dog but still nasty. As my face is not built for a protective mask (it would require shaving the hair and whiskers off of my handsome profile which is totally unacceptable.) I am glad my deputy was able to see to that task. Anyway end result is it is tough and durable and no skid – and once cured no longer so odiferous.

Dog Rooms with resin floor finish. Hold your breath right now.

This last trip I specifically tasked one of my deputies to seek out the color formulas for the paint. And she had success so there are some images for you techno-geek interior decorator or art types. The rest of you can just skip over those images in the gallery. And last but not least I need to say that I am quite happy with all of the glass being installed in the lobby area. I will be able to easily check and see that my fur is carefully laid in place and keep an eye on the fish tank and cat housing areas from multiple angles in the lobby as well as monitor arrival of fans.

Lobby and the glass for reflections.

Lobby and the glass for reflections.

I know I still owe you (my fans and readers) a bit on those cool cat condos so I will try and get that done soon. A couple are on order through PAWED’s Finishing Touches campaign funds so you’ll at least hear more about it when those arrive. On a final note the Grand Opening for the shelter is not scheduled until probably January 2015.

That’s about it for this week which is quite a lot. It’s incredibly exciting. Meowza! – Nap time.

CUPBOARDS PAINT & LINOLEUM

Lobby in Mermaid Cove and Engine Black overhead.

Lobby in Mermaid Cove and Engine Black overhead.

Word in from my deputies is that things are looking pretty spiffy over at the New Animal Services Facility on Capitol. As you can see from this image of the Lobby the “Mermaid Cove” green goes well with the “Engine Black” they have done the duct work and overhead area in. I really like the way staff decided to do the color scheme of my new abode. The on-line Feng Shui class I am taking when the computers get left on has really been fun and helps me understand more about these sorts of things. It is a Chinese philosophical system of harmonizing everyone with the surrounding environment. The term feng shui literally translates as “wind-water” in English.

1/32″ grooved trowel is used to apply the glue for the linoleum.

The flooring guys are busy over at the new place this week and will be for a while yet. There is a lot of flooring to go in. They have an assortment of special knives and trowels and the like they use to put the linoleum down. You can see they are meticulous and take great care in their work. The pictures of the tall ladders are still intriguing to me but I am even more curious about all of the cool cabinets going in. – So many new places to nap. – I was looking at the image of the plan and there is even going to be a kitten room so they won’t disturb my naps and it will give me a good place to tutor them in proper cat behavior as well.

Cupboards for napping.

Cupboards for napping.

And the housing for the horses, I will get to visit at the new facility, it has its foundation in. The walkway to keep my feet clean on the way out there will be done next. The Finishing Touches Campaign is still going strong, the first set of donor tiles are ordered and we only have a bit more to raise for Cat Condos and Dog turf. So take a gander at the photo gallery below and revel in the progress being made and the possibilities it will unleash.

Before I sign off, can we talk hamsters for a moment? Can you please get these little guys out a

here. They are just too tempting for any cat and since their adoption fee is sponsored, well it would just be a really good idea to take one home to your house so they don’t torture me any further. I am well educated but I am still a cat remember. You can check them out on http://www.petharbor.com they are at the EDC Animal Services Placerville Shelter.

That’s all for tonight gotta get back to my Feng Shui class. – Meowza! Bullet

HVAC & COLORS

LARGE HVAC

LARGE HVAC

A couple of blogs back I mentioned the importance of all that ducting in the ceiling. I told you about how critical it was to keep the air clean and healthy for all the residents. This past week they installed the big air moving and conditioning units that will do the job. This part of the construction is called HVAC. (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning). Just how big is a system that can move all that air?

For those of you inclined think like a cat, your household system is about like a house cat where as the New Shelter HVAC would be akin to a tiger or the prehistoric saber-toothed cat Smilodon populator (490 to 880 lb). For the dog people (I checked with some recent and exceptionally intelligent canine shelter residents for this information.) your household unit would be like a Terrier or at most a small Beagle and the new shelter system, it would be more like a Caucasian Ovcharka (110 to 200 pounds) or the giant mythical dog Cerberus who guarded the gates to Hades (Unknown size, surprise, no body took the risk to put him on a scale). To say this thing has teeth is an understatement and the analogies are apt. I will get some specs later but look at this big thing. It is truly impressive, and so necessary to keep the animals and people in a modern shelter healthy. Without it you might liken it to traveling in an airplane with some dude who has the swine flu or even Ebola. I am probably being a bit over dramatic, but the news lately, well thankfully cats don’t seem to get Ebola, but I’m feeling pretty bad for those folks out there in Africa right now. – Anyway, this HVAC, it’s real important to the shelter.

Let’s move on to a more upbeat theme, color and paint. The new shelter is going to be a bright and cheery place. To go along with the Siamese Kitten color there is a lovely green color, Mermaid Cove. That made me think of something call Seagull Syndrome. But I will tell you about Seagull Syndrome next time.

Color on the walls.

Color on the walls.

And, you may be wondering about how I know about colors since cats cannot see much color. I can see shades of gray and blue. But, if I can get pictures of stuff my deputies can provide me with hex codes that tell me exactly what color an item is with that. Every color has a unique hex code. Siamese kitten #eee2d5.  Mermaid Cove is not listed at this time but as I said, it is a lovely green.

Mermaid Cove

Mermaid Cove

You can look up colors at http://encycolorpedia.com There is also a striking blue/purple which I am thinking must be peacock something but it’s not confirmed yet. Please feel free to send your comments including guesses as to the actual name of this color.

As for progress on the PAWED Finishing Touches campaign, time is rapidly running out to get a Donor Tile done in the first go round. August 16 is the deadline for this batch. I am awed but not surprised by the generosity of the PAWED members/donors and community members who have stepped forward to raise over $190,000 for my new home, i.e. the New Animal Services Facility. It is heartwarming to think that my fans are so incredibly generous. Thank You.

Over here at the old shelter we are still pretty kitten heavy. Facebook angels have sponsored individual cats and dogs, PAWED has sponsored senior cats and dogs and also kittens. In July these helped get over 40 kittens adopted and 7 senior dogs as well as some adult cats. Take a look at the current adoptables on petharbor via Animal Services Adotption page, PAWED’s Facebook page, EDC Animal Services Facebook page and on the Mountain Democrat Friday Adopt A Pet page.

Time for me to do some work, some new dogs just came in that need to be temperament tested and there is a litter of tuxedo kittens here that need some education as well. Then its Handsome sleep time, right after I test the water in the fish tank and agitate it a bit.

Meowza! Bullet.

SIAMESE KITTENS

As things are winding down at the Sand Fire, and its sort of getting back to normal around the shelter, I felt it was prime time for another update on the New Shelter Facility over on Capitol. All I can say is Siamese Kitten – Yes you read that right – Siamese Kitten. My deputy found all of these white plastic buckets on site.

Siamese Kitten?

Siamese Kitten?

A little investigative work turned up the truth. This is fortunately not the leavings of a kitten smuggling ring that uses the buckets to transport the kittens, but the color of the interior walls at the new facility. On close examination the deputy found painters painting and buckets of this stuff being pumped out airlessly in lines snaking throughout the building. And the color of the paint does match that of a Siamese kitten.

IMG_0078wKeeping with the pet theme, the painters are using “Husky” plastic to mask off stuff as they paint. It appears that most of the insulation is in and the drywall is up and taped. There is a little sanding and smoothing of the taped plaster but mostly just a lot of painting.

The giant ladders still fascinate me though. I wonder if there are other places that can be accessed for exploration once the drop ceilings are in. I definitely have reconsidered letting the little kittens go exploring up there as I am sure one would drop through the ceiling onto me during my all important afternoon nap and handsome sleep.

Check out the Velux Sun Tunnels. It still amazes me how much light these things bring into the building. It all seems to be on schedule for an expected opening in October.

Sun Tunnels, Drop ceiling supports and giant ladders.

Sun Tunnels, Drop ceiling supports and giant ladders.

More good news. The PAWED Finishing Touches campaign is going great. So far $180,000 of the $200,000 goal have been raised. We really do have some incredibly generous members and donors in our community, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The photography crew came in on Tuesday to get My picture for My tile for My new shelter. Did you get one of your pet for the tile wall in the new shelter? Click here if you are interested.

Speaking of the photographs, check out some of the little ones available for adoption at the shelter right now. They look pretty energetic and likely to disturb “some one’s” afternoon naps. Sooo, your assistance in getting them adopted ASAP would be greatly appreciated. All kittens are currently only $40 to adopt.

One last thought is that I think we need a training class on proper cat massage and chin rubbing techniques. I will be glad to provide direct instruction to all attendees or work with you on a one on one basis. Just stop by and say high to Bullet at the Animal Shelter in Placerville. Remember 12-1 is nap time – so not then.

AND SAVE THE DATE! – The Grand Opening Celebration is schedule for November 15, 2014.

PAINT AND FIRE

Animal Services staff, PAWED volunteers and my Deputies are all scrambling this last week. And workers are still on site at the new shelter making further great strides. The FIRE in the title is of course the “Sand Fire”. And this is the incident map from the CalFire website. The PAINT is the paint going up on the walls at the new shelter as work continues apace. Fortunately the painting is going all ahead full and the fire is almost fully contained now – So glad it is not the other way around.

2014 SAND FIRE incident map.

2014 SAND FIRE incident map.

My deputies and I are gathering up stories and pictures from the Sand Fire and my next blog will focus on those. Just to let you know that Deputies Janice and Donna were both in the evacuation zone and I was really worried about them and our other PAWED friends that live in that area. I had all the dogs and cats at the shelter thinking strong positive thoughts for everyone in that area. We want everyone to be OK and I hate the smell of singed fur on many levels. – Not gonna get into that on these pages.

I am happy to report that Staff, SCLAR, PAWED and Foothill Dog Rescue all worked together to shelter and rescue animals during this incident. Lee’s Feed also chipped in with discounted supplies for the animals affected by Sand Fire. Lee’s has a special account and you can donate through them to the animals affected. The donations are overseen by Animal Services staff so that they are properly used. Animal Control Field Officers are routinely checking up on the animals that were not evacuated and those that are returning now that the road blocks are being lifted.

If you are missing an animal please post on El Dorado County Watch Animal Lost and Found FB page and call Animal Services during regular hours at 530.621.5795. The same for found animals. Check back tomorrow for the New Shelter Construction Update and Gallery. Check back next week for stories from the fire incident. If you have a story to share please send me an email. – For now just Meow. BULLET

KITTENYATAS, LIGHTTUBES, DARK HALLS AND DRYWALL(S)

A lot has happened in the last 20 days. The “Steam punk” look is gone behind all of the dry wall and concrete board. At least before, I could

Light tubes let in the good part of the outdoors - sunlight.

Light tubes let in the good part of the outdoors – sunlight.

walk right through the walls from one room to the next. Now this place is really a labyrinth of dark hallways (no skylights there and electric is not yet connected) and rooms. Some of the rooms are wonderfully lit with skylights. This technology is pretty amazing – It lets the good parts of the outdoors in (sunlight) and keeps the bad parts out (cold, wind, rain and pesky flies and mosquitos).

IMG_9358w

Cold water lines, hot water lines with white insulation wrap, a fire sprinkler tie in and a drain pipe nested in that nasty pink fiberglass insulation. – Safety Hint. – don’t let your pets near this stuff including walking around in construction areas.

The crew working at the shelter now is mainly taping the drywall and covering seams in the concrete board. Pipes and wires still run everywhere but a lot of it is now covered up. The insulation is in, in the walls and surrounding the hot water supply lines. I am reconsidering my idea to let the little ones into the duct work. Look at the size of these ducts. I am thinking they would probably make an incredible echoing racket and disturb my “handsome sleep”. My new plan is to get one of the construction people or maybe Deputy Donna to build me a platform on one of the giant ladders. That could then be placed under one of the skylights. Lots of sun and out of reach of the little tykes. It’s something to think about anyway.

The Barn Pad is graded the barn is funded (Thank You Noah's Wish) and on its way.

The Barn Pad is graded the barn is funded (Thank You Noah’s Wish) and on its way.

Outside the Large Animal Barn pad is looking pretty ready. It’s just in time too, because Noah’s Wish just donated the funds to buy it. With that and the donation from Nor Cal Structures that project is now ready to move forward. I love the smell of horses, I am Sheriff Bullet after all, so I am lobbying to be allowed to go outside to rub on their legs and do their temperament testing. Kind of like I do for the dogs. That matching thing for the Shade Sails is all done to so it looks like the dogs will get their shade so they don’t burn their feet on the synthetic turf in the summer months and the staff and volunteers don’t get sun burned. PAWED has all the Major Shelter Donor’s names listed on their website now. Take a look. Click on  a paw.Gold paw platinum paw Silver paw If there is any of the joint compound left I was thinking I could make some Kittenyata’s (You know, a piñata in the shape of a kitten.) out of it for our Open House. And no, I would not just cover over some random kittens with the plaster and tape but utilize my deputies to help me create them (without a kitten inside).  Either that or see if I can use it as a poultice to help my arthritis – it is called joint compound. Gallery below. Put cursor on pic to see caption.

Think this stuff (Joint Comound) will help my arthritis?

Think this stuff (Joint Comound) will help my arthritis?

That and I am hoping that this blue stuff called Dryvit is not some new food supplement we all have to eat at the new shelter. – I’ve got some internet searching to do again tonight. One thing has not changed, we still need kitten fosters and people to adopt. It is still kitten season. There are some really excellent little tykes like Orbit and Capt ‘N Black still waiting to be adopted. The dogs seem to fly out of here faster that I can draw my six-shooter,
