GIANT CAT HAMMOCKS INSTALLED

fisheye shade

Can you honestly tell me that these do not look like giant cat hammocks?

GIANT CAT HAMMOCKS INSTALLED The Shade Sails Are Up should be the title.

IMG_7352w

Shade Sail installation is an interesting and mildly complex process.

Some of my deputies diligently supervised the PAWED  Finishing Touches Shade Sails installation. As you may remember in my last blog the Turf was down but the sails were still in transit from Australia. The speedy pineapple express weather pattern was held up somewhat at the ports? or who knows why but they arrived and on Friday, February 20th, 2015 the official installation occurred. For all the world these really look like sunny day Hammocks for cats if some one would just provide me with a ladder I could test out my theory. But alas it is an unsecured area for us clever cat types and hence reserved for the dogs and people who are denizens of only ground level.

IMG_7389w

Sail installation involves, special fire rated nylon, huge turnbuckles and some mongo big cables.

That said, they are still really really cool and worth stopping for a look see when you come to visit me at the shelter. It has been said in a sort of semi-official email dispatch that the pictures do not do them justice. But my Deputies have tried to capture the installation and “the look” for my fans that are not able to rush right down to see them in person. Pictures of the Shade Sail installation process are in the gallery at the end of today’s blog.

Serious turnbuckles and cables.

Serious turnbuckles and cables.

But please, DO come visit me often in the next couple of weeks as the Volunteer Coordinator Deanna Chedsey will be away for a bit from 3/2 to 3/9 and I rely heavily on her for head pats and the like.

A big MEOWZA for the recently adopted shelter residents.

TURF’s UP (OR DOWN in this case)

IMG_6272hdtvIf you every thought “a horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse” (ala Richard the Third – sort of) you can make your dreams become reality. Check out El Dorado County Animal Services Pet Harbor link to see 6 pages of these noble creatures which are available for adoption. Just one of these noble beasts can pretty handily eliminate the need to weedwack a 5-10 acre parcel come spring time. With my limited grasp of “whinney-speak” I don’t have a lot of detailed history on them but the website should provide a pretty good introductions for them. So have a look here under other animals  – – they are housed off site so you will have to make arrangements to visit them in person. The history of why EDCAS has so many of our equine friends right now is here.

Another new experience for me is the arrival of a couple of pet pigs. I do not know much about them as I do not speak “oink” at all. “Oink” is not a very intelligible when spoken by cats anyway. And while we cats might like a bit of a dust bath on occasion we just cannot comprehend the whole concept of a mud bath even though I understand it is a common spa treatment enjoyed by people. So if you speak “oink” or want to learn it stop by and practice with the two temporary residents. More about them on the last page of other animals for adoption on the EDCAS website.

And as promised last week, an update on the synthetic turf and shade sails. There is a nice gallery of pictures below on the turf installation and the setting of the shade sail tension poles. (Thanks Deputy Barb L. for the majority of the pictures and for coordinating ALL of these Finishing Touches that spiff up the place even more.) The sails are in transit from Australia. With the Pineapple express in effect may be they could just unfurl them and send the by “air mail”? We need rain and snow but this wind is pretty scary and it upsets my naps. (Rain and snow are quiet so no objections to them at all, as I am quite snug and dry inside on MY Lobby Counter or on Deanna’s and MY desk.) Anyway right now we are looking for the shade sail installation around the 16th or 17th of February.

Turf is in, poles are up and Sails are on the way.

Take note; Animal Outreach has a Free Feral Spay Day on 21 FEB 2015. So if you have feral cats that need fixing and live in El Dorado County, now’s the time to get them fixed BEFORE they get pregnant and have kittens.

Lastly a shout our to some of my buds who were adopted last week.

COOL CATS: Puddy, Fiona, Heidi, Aiko, Valentino, Bugzie, Tym, Sarabi, Tartar Sauce, Stitch, Katness, Tuckett, Mattie, Helen & George.

CUTTING RIBBONS – officially

IMG_5048w2Well we are all official down here at the NEW El Dorado County West Slope Animal Shelter. On Wednesday, December 10th all the major players, in the construction of “my new place”, converged on the lobby and strung up a large red ribbon across the path of my visitors. I was assured that it was only temporary and that after some speeches and the like it would be cut in half and removed. It would signal that we are now officially open. I read up on the internet after the event and found that this is one of those necessary human formality things. As long as these things bring me new fans and head pats I am good with it.IMG_5176mbestw

As you can see from the photos I provided supervision through most of the event and allowed the attendees to visit with the little tykes in the cat adoption room.

Thanks are in order for the cool dog shaped flower arrangement is from Flowers on Main in Placerville and the nifty animal and paw shaped cookies are from Sugar Lillie Bakery in the town of El Dorado.

There was also a slide show of the whole shelter construction process running on the lobby monitor – a thank you is in order to all my deputies for providing photographs for this. (Alli, Janice, Donna, Lisa & Barb L).

The administrators are telling me that there will be another event for my fans this coming spring. They are not sure if they are calling it a grand opening or an open house. Either way plan on coming in to visit me then. But you can also stop by any time to see me at the new shelter – 6435 Capitol Ave. in Diamond Springs.IMG_4535w

One last note for this post is that a New Shelter Volunteer Coordinator has been hired. They will be taking over the role that PAWED has been providing of organizing and tracking the shelter volunteers. More on this in my next blog.

And finally I just wanted to wish you all a Happy Holiday. – MEOWZA BULLET

BACKDROPS & DROP-BYS

More accolades for“Deputy” Jeff, who also got our photography backdrop in the Cat Meet N Greet Room up and running so my other deputies can properly showcase the adoptables on the West Slope and to make sure I have a proper picture portfolio to submit for those upcoming movie roles. (More on this around Christmas) He did a bang up job anchoring this stuff to the metal stud work, without damaging the beautiful new walls.

Finnegan has been adopted.

If you have been watching on the PAWED or Animal Services Facebook pages you’ll notice its all set up for the Harvest season. Soon you will see it all decked out for the Holiday Season. AND … if you stop by to play with my lady friends, canine buddies and the little kitty tykes here at the shelter you can check them all out by just having a seat in the lobby and watching the monitor there. “Pretty cat darn cool,” I would say. Plus you can visit with me at the same time. I pretty much supervise the Lobby area just like at the old shelter.

Drop-by while your out doing your holiday shopping to say hello and give me a head or chin scratch and maybe visit with some of the other residents before they move on to their forever homes.

I hear I have a photo session coming up again pretty soon so I gotta head off and get some more quality Handsome napping done. — Meowza, Bullet.

MYSPACE?

Volunteer Room - MYSPACE

Volunteer Room – MYSPACE

While I have been working on my Handsome sleep, a lot was going on here at the New Animal Services Facility on the West Slope of El Dorado County. The nice people of PAWED are setting me up with some proper digs right next to the lobby. I had to interrupt my quality nap time to do inspections and make sure everything was just right. I think its pretty close now, what do you think?

Bullet's Inspection reveals inadequate napping area at first.

My inspection reveals inadequate napping area at first.

Note the key features of “MYSPACE”*

  • good napping spot within reach of volunteers working at the computer station for routine head pats
  • computer station readily available for my research needs
  • easy accessibility of the lobby so I can supervise
  • private lavatory facility
  • appropriate animal theme décor
  • constant availability of food and water
  • ability to accommodate multiple fans at one time
Correction of napping space deficiencies - testing in progress.

Thanks again to Deputy Donna and Deputy Charlene for setting up my space and making sure I have what I need and can share it with my fans.

HOME SWEET HOME – Time to nap

EDCASsign 5x4wYippeee!  Yippeeee! Yipeee! WE’VE MOVED IN, we’ve moved in. — OK sorry I am a bit giddy and over tired and even perhaps a bit confused from no sleep, the car ride and anxiety that my fans might not know where to find me. First things first. Me, shelter staff, Animal Services officers, the director and even the administrative staff are in our new home 6435 Capitol Ave. in Diamond Springs. First is was all the chaos of the King Fire and then all the staff and volunteers with their packing and cleaning and moving activities that have totally disrupted my “Handsome Sleep.” They even had to deliberately wake me up on several occasions to ask my advise about where to put some of the items. Anyway it was incredibly exhausting but as you canIMG_3580w see they found me a suitable napping spot at the front desk so I can greet my fans. We open in the morning. That will be THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16th at 9:30am. Check the El Dorado County Animal Services Website for the shelter and administrative hours (I hear tell will be open at lunch now so my fans can stop by on their lunch hour.) and other details.

The grand opening has yet to be announced and things are still being completed around here but you can stop in and take a look at the lobby and give me a couple of nice head pats starting on the 16th.

I am a bit disappointed that there are not too many dogs in here yet and the barn is not quite ready for those horse types I will need to train but its all looking pretty good. Outside perimeter fencing is just beginning to go up but the walkway to visit me is in and today’s sky was a lovely blue.IMG_3579w

Inside Alli and Sara are putting up shelving and filling it with blankets and towels to keep all of my friends and me comfortable. There seems to be a room, a cupboard or nook or cranny for about everything. Tuesday the veterinary clinic and grooming equipment started to arrive. Two of the cool cat towers are already here along with some incredibly confusing kitten triplets that I cannot for the life of me tell apart.

Two of the triplets.

Two of the triplets.

After getting the volunteer computer up and running, one of my deputies (Deputy Donna) almost scared the little tykes to death making funny faces. The kittens not the deputy should be in next week’s Adopt A Pet Ad in the Mountain Democrat. PAWED volunteers were greeting people at the door this week so I could get some sleep. It will take staff and I a while to sort out everything here at the new place so please bear with us as we get all the kinks out and as I catch up on my sleep.

Deputy Donna playing with the kittens.

I hope you will all be as pleased and excited as I am to see this huge undertaking and milestone for Animal Services become a reality. That’s it until I am more rested. Meowza! – Bullet

Its Official Now – Signage, Cool Floors, Fixtures and Kennels

IMG_3051wBE PREPARED to be amazed at the progress on the New Animal Services Facility. I thought that Deputy Donna went a little nuts with the photos of the barn from last week, but then well the deputies must be having a contest or something. Deputy Lisa kind of went a little more over the top with the number of pictures for this week. I can see the problem though it’s all just so exciting and elegant and elegant to look at. First off let me just say – “WE HAVE A COOL SIGN”. (Thank you to Deputy Jamie for the design. – I hope I bought enough deputy badges. – I think I need to deputize Sara at the shelter too – did you see the great pictures she posted on the EDC Animal Services Facebook page last week?IMG_3183w

So the sign went in today and the concrete was still really wet when my deputy took the picture, like just poured. Pretty good timing. The next thing to note was the Sally Port roof is up and the whole roof is on the barn now along with a lot of the doors. Fencing will be next I surmise after my plan review tonight.

Also outside they are working on all the walkways that will bring my adoring fans in for visits and to adopt future residents. Anyway really starting to look impressive out front.

IMG_3181wAnd once you go inside, oh my. Really artsy flooring inlays of dogs and cats in the entry and lobby. Since my fans don’t use litter boxes its good that the bathrooms are already looking good. And check out the washer and dryer, boy those would have been helpful during the King Fire and Animal Emergency Sheltering. IMG_3132wAnd the Veterinary Clinic area is well underway too. There are a great variety of rooms with sinks for preparing food, bathing and grooming animals and of course for the staff and volunteers.IMG_3114w Last but not least the dog kennels are being installed this week and probably next week too.

IMG_3076wThe endless hallway still looks endless from a cat’s perspective.

Please really check out the colors in the pictures they are inspiring and soothing all at the same time. My deputy said that felt incredibly positive on the way home from doing the photographs. I hope these images inspire all my fans at least as much. Anyway enjoy. BTW my Sheriff hat arrived, but I am not sure when I will get a portfolio addition wearing the hat.

Til next time MEOWZA! oh heck YIPPEEEEEE! — Sheriff Bullet.

A Roof. A Barn Roof. Well part of it.

While the King Fire wound down the barn and roof continued to go up. Protection for future

The beginnings of a roof.

The beginnings of a roof.

Animal Services residents against the type of rain that that saved the day on the fire (in addition to those wonderful men and women fighting the fire), the same rain that I read we so desperately need to end the drought. With a good roof I will not have to pray for no rain to keep my friends dry. So its just good all the way around. Deputy Donna was coming to Hangtown (Sheriff Bullet you know so I like the old west connotation of the old name) to get her haircut so she was able to stop in and capture more of the roofing process. See the gallery at the bottom

of this post.

While the King Fire was raging not much was able to go on with adoptions and such. The dogs went out to foster care and I hadn’t much dog testing to do, so I hung out got what Handsome Sleep I could with all the ruckus and tested the fish tank water more frequently – an important need with all the ash and smoke in the air from the fire.

And you just won’t believe the progress being made on the interior of the building. I’ll blog about that next time – very soon.    MEOWZA – Sheriff Bullet.

EMERGENCY SHELTERS AND BARN RAISING

With the King Fire it has been a pretty chaotic 10 days. Before I get started let me just say that my two lady friends Thumbelina and Nora featured in my last post have both been adopted. My buds Katt and Mouse are still looking for their forever homes and will be in this week’s Adopt a Pet ad in the Mountain Democrat. Most of the dogs were fostered out or moved to other shelters because of the fire.

King Fire Pollock Pines Area day 3

King Fire Pollock Pines Area day 3

King Fire Day 9

King Fire Day 9

With 4-5 different sheltering sites at one time or another it has taken some great team work to keep them all staffed with volunteers and supplies. Once again the Ponderosa FFA stepped up with their school Farm at the High School and with manpower from the FFA to house small livestock like sheep, goats, pigs poultry and water fowl. The Fairgrounds is staffed with South County Large Animal Rescue volunteers and El Dorado County Animal Services staff who are looking after large livestock like horses.

The Placerville Shelter site is housing dogs, cats, chinchillas, cage birds and a guinea pig. (No partridges and no pear trees or other flora) – PAWED shelter volunteers and EDCAS staff are seeing to their needs. As you all know how important my ‘Handsome Sleep’ is, I am sure you can appreciate how big an impact this has had on my nap schedule, but the poor dogs and cats that had to be moved 3 times as the fire shifted and surged and the humans caring for them had it way worse (not to mention the poor people who were evacuated). Sheltering so many dogs at the EDCAS Placerville Shelter was made possible through the loan of 8 dog show tents by HANGTOWN KENNEL CLUB – these are critical to provide shade. A local community member also lent the use of an additional building near by for cats. Thank you to all of my fans who have donated supplies and have taken laundry to do at their own homes so my friends can have clean bedding.  So I will count my self lucky as at least my home did not move through all of this.

The lobby is looking nice with lots of glass and soothing colors.

The lobby is looking nice with lots of glass and soothing colors.

Speaking of homes, I thought you would all like some good news. Things are really going well over at my new home and this last week that barn kit you saw delivered in piles is going up. A modern ‘barn raising’. As Tim the construction guy says its been good with all the holes and bolts aligning. Its been such a quick process I have had to put 3 different deputies on the task of capturing it in photos (Thanks Barb L., Donna D. and Lisa C.) The horses will have a nice woodsy view out some of the back doors.

Barn Star - Check out the gallery of barn raising pictures below.

Inside the New Animal Services Facility glass and doors are going in and every thing is really looking spiffy. There is even a drinking fountain for my fans in the front lobby. Lots of work to keep the construction guys busy for a bit yet, but not too much.

Out front they are now grading for the dog exercise areas and other stuff. The site plan will tell you what all of it is.2014-03-17 TI Site Plan – Dogs and Barn

My Sheriff’s hat came and I have some possible movie roles too but I will share those next time if the King Fire cooperates. Anyway, enjoy the gallery of the latest new shelter photos including the barn raising. Till next time MEOWZA and stay safe. That especially goes for all the animal services officers, Sheriff’s officers and firefighters out there working this nasty King Fire.

SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED

Hey readers, spread the word that there are still a lot of great adult cats here at the Shelter in Placerville. Some cool dudes are available (Please get them a home as they are competition for me and as I get older I am not so into that sort of thing.) Specifically Katt & Mouse (Katt is not as “cool” or educated as I, Bullet, am but he likes to do that nifty head butt thing.).

KATT

KATT

Mouse

MOUSE

There are some of my lovely lady friends available too, and while I enjoy their company emencely, I really know that they deserve a spotlight of their own in their own forever homes and that’s hard for them to get with me soaking up all the attention around the shelter. Take a look at Thumbelina and Nora in the gallery too.

Remember some of the adult cats have been sponsored by Facebook Angels and all cats over 1 year of age are eligible for the PAWED senior cat discount. Even the administrators at the county have stepped up and kittens are ½ off right now. The county has an information page on this and on fostering kittens. So if your not ready to commit to a forever home how about doing a test drive by fostering. http://www.edcgov.us/Government/PublicHealth/Press_Releases/2014/The_Cat_s_Meow.aspx

While we have a lot of cats and kittens here at the Placerville Shelter I am doing such a great job of testing and approving all the canines that they are going like hot cakes. My photography deputies are not even able to keep up with the cool white back drop photos at times. Anyway just check out Friday Mountain Democrat Adopt a Pet Page, the EDC Animal Services Facebook page, the PAWED Facebook page or the shelter adoption website.

Over at the New EDC Westslope Animal Services Facility things are still moving apace. The barn kit arrived today as projected and I deputized another photographer so I could get you some images of it (Thanks to my new deputy Barb L.) You can see as she says “Some Assembly Required” is an understatement. I have tasked a couple of my deputies with capturing the process so I can share it with you in the next couple of weeks.

Barn Foundation

Barn Foundation

The interior of the facility is still scheduled for completion this month. The dog kennels are getting what looks like a textured resin coating on the floors. My deputy related to me that this stuff and the glue that they use on the linoleum is pretty strong smelling stuff. Not quite the same as a skunked dog but still nasty. As my face is not built for a protective mask (it would require shaving the hair and whiskers off of my handsome profile which is totally unacceptable.) I am glad my deputy was able to see to that task. Anyway end result is it is tough and durable and no skid – and once cured no longer so odiferous.

Dog Rooms with resin floor finish. Hold your breath right now.

Dog Rooms with resin floor finish. Hold your breath right now.

This last trip I specifically tasked one of my deputies to seek out the color formulas for the paint. And she had success so there are some images for you techno-geek interior decorator or art types. The rest of you can just skip over those images in the gallery. And last but not least I need to say that I am quite happy with all of the glass being installed in the lobby area. I will be able to easily check and see that my fur is carefully laid in place and keep an eye on the fish tank and cat housing areas from multiple angles in the lobby as well as monitor arrival of fans.

Lobby and the glass for reflections.

Lobby and the glass for reflections.

I know I still owe you (my fans and readers) a bit on those cool cat condos so I will try and get that done soon. A couple are on order through PAWED’s Finishing Touches campaign funds so you’ll at least hear more about it when those arrive. On a final note the Grand Opening for the shelter is not scheduled until probably January 2015.

That’s about it for this week which is quite a lot. It’s incredibly exciting. Meowza! – Nap time.
