Annie's Makeover

Annie’s Makeover

Hello again to everyone. Have you been wondering just where I have been and what I have been up to? And perhaps, what is going on in our great shelter? I have been in my usual spot at the front desk greeting adopters and visitors and also testing dogs for cat friendliness. The problem is my scribe has been kind of missing in action but is now back; once again ready to assist me in cat-a-logging the goings on around here.

There is a lot of new volunteer action of late, with trips to the Placerville Library, Placerville Tractor Supply and plans for the Christmas Parade on December 6th in Placerville. Thank you to all our volunteers and a extra paws-up to the volunteers getting adoptables out to these events. More on these outings in the future.

Today I want to remind you of just one of my important jobs here at the shelter in Diamond Springs. That of course requires my cat’s-pertise as a dog-cat compatibility tester. I have a keen eye and extensive experience in this roll. It is important to be up front about dogs that just can’t be civil to cats so that appropriate homes are found for these dogs. Some of these dogs are quite incredible, obedient, loving – basically awesome – but they have that one flaw. – They appear to be “addicted” to chasing cats and other small four legged critters.

My point? – Do you have a household with no cats? Perhaps you do not even have a pets and need a bosom buddy to do stuff with? I present here for your consideration an awesome dog “ANNIE”. The

Annie goes outside under the Giant Cat Hammocks

Paw-Parazzi spent some time with Annie last week. I watched from a safe perch and she was very very good about getting done up in a fantastic pink Tutu and faux pearls. Let me just say that you would not have gotten me into that get up. Annie was an angel about it and even seemed to enjoy it. After the back drop photo shoot Annie and the Paw-Parazzi went out to the special grass section with the giant cat hammocks for a few action shots. Anyway take a look at this great dog. But remember – Annie is “addicted” to chasing cats and needs a household WITHOUT CATS. So if your home is a candidate stop by and meet Annie and if you have dogs of your own arrange a meet and greet through the staff here at the Shelter in Diamond Springs.

Enjoy the photo gallery of Annie below. —  Annie is really a most incredible dog!

That’s it for today. Just come meet Annie.

— But while you are here I am sure you will feel compelled to stop by at the front desk to give me – BULLET – a few pats on the head first. Now it is time for some “handsome” sleep for me. Hopefully I can get some terminal time in around midnight to work on some gifting ideas I have. – MEOWZA Bullet!   PS – Thanks to Kelly for dressing Annie for her photo shoot. Thanks to Katherine for Annie’s Tutu and pearls and thanks to Carrie for the back drop shots of Annie.

fisheye shade

Can you honestly tell me that these do not look like giant cat hammocks?

GIANT CAT HAMMOCKS INSTALLED The Shade Sails Are Up should be the title.

Shade Sail installation is an interesting and mildly complex process.

Some of my deputies diligently supervised the PAWED  Finishing Touches Shade Sails installation. As you may remember in my last blog the Turf was down but the sails were still in transit from Australia. The speedy pineapple express weather pattern was held up somewhat at the ports? or who knows why but they arrived and on Friday, February 20th, 2015 the official installation occurred. For all the world these really look like sunny day Hammocks for cats if some one would just provide me with a ladder I could test out my theory. But alas it is an unsecured area for us clever cat types and hence reserved for the dogs and people who are denizens of only ground level.

Sail installation involves, special fire rated nylon, huge turnbuckles and some mongo big cables.

That said, they are still really really cool and worth stopping for a look see when you come to visit me at the shelter. It has been said in a sort of semi-official email dispatch that the pictures do not do them justice. But my Deputies have tried to capture the installation and “the look” for my fans that are not able to rush right down to see them in person. Pictures of the Shade Sail installation process are in the gallery at the end of today’s blog.

Serious turnbuckles and cables.

Serious turnbuckles and cables.

But please, DO come visit me often in the next couple of weeks as the Volunteer Coordinator Deanna Chedsey will be away for a bit from 3/2 to 3/9 and I rely heavily on her for head pats and the like.

A big MEOWZA for the recently adopted shelter residents.

TURF’s UP (OR DOWN in this case)

IMG_6272hdtvIf you every thought “a horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse” (ala Richard the Third – sort of) you can make your dreams become reality. Check out El Dorado County Animal Services Pet Harbor link to see 6 pages of these noble creatures which are available for adoption. Just one of these noble beasts can pretty handily eliminate the need to weedwack a 5-10 acre parcel come spring time. With my limited grasp of “whinney-speak” I don’t have a lot of detailed history on them but the website should provide a pretty good introductions for them. So have a look here under other animals  – – they are housed off site so you will have to make arrangements to visit them in person. The history of why EDCAS has so many of our equine friends right now is here.

Another new experience for me is the arrival of a couple of pet pigs. I do not know much about them as I do not speak “oink” at all. “Oink” is not a very intelligible when spoken by cats anyway. And while we cats might like a bit of a dust bath on occasion we just cannot comprehend the whole concept of a mud bath even though I understand it is a common spa treatment enjoyed by people. So if you speak “oink” or want to learn it stop by and practice with the two temporary residents. More about them on the last page of other animals for adoption on the EDCAS website.

And as promised last week, an update on the synthetic turf and shade sails. There is a nice gallery of pictures below on the turf installation and the setting of the shade sail tension poles. (Thanks Deputy Barb L. for the majority of the pictures and for coordinating ALL of these Finishing Touches that spiff up the place even more.) The sails are in transit from Australia. With the Pineapple express in effect may be they could just unfurl them and send the by “air mail”? We need rain and snow but this wind is pretty scary and it upsets my naps. (Rain and snow are quiet so no objections to them at all, as I am quite snug and dry inside on MY Lobby Counter or on Deanna’s and MY desk.) Anyway right now we are looking for the shade sail installation around the 16th or 17th of February.

Turf is in, poles are up and Sails are on the way.

Turf is in, poles are up and Sails are on the way.

Take note; Animal Outreach has a Free Feral Spay Day on 21 FEB 2015. So if you have feral cats that need fixing and live in El Dorado County, now’s the time to get them fixed BEFORE they get pregnant and have kittens.

Lastly a shout our to some of my buds who were adopted last week.

COOL CATS: Puddy, Fiona, Heidi, Aiko, Valentino, Bugzie, Tym, Sarabi, Tartar Sauce, Stitch, Katness, Tuckett, Mattie, Helen & George.

DESERVING DOGS: Reba, Lira, Murphy, Westin, Mufin, Polly

FEATHERED FRIENDS: All three remaining Parakeets

POCKET PETS?(rabbit): Raider

ELEGANT EQUINES & A Sheep(listed first): Wooly Wonka, Toffee, Yuri, Suzy, Specks, Tag Along, Drogon, Danni, Marbles, Ariel, Spice

Remember – it is kitten season with new arrivals weekly.

Come check them out!

Come check them out!

Check back next week for news on the Shade Sails and the latest “scoop”. Signing off, MEOWZA – Sheriff Bullet.

I have been more than a little remiss in not keeping my fans updated. I had to focus on slimming down a bit after all the Holiday kitty treats. My New Year’s Resolution is more head pats and less treats. We’ll see how that works out. So we are well on our way into 2015 and there are still Finishing Touches being completed around the place here at 6435 Capitol Ave. in Diamond Springs, the location of my new place. Some one got me a great new napping bed where I can efficiently greet visitors and fans. It is pretty cool. Thanks to my Secret Santa person for this. I may never know but I love it all the same.

Next week (maybe sooner) I will tell you all about the synthetic turf and progress on the Shade Sails, but this week I am super stoked to show you the Donor Tile Wall.

Donor Tile Wall being admired by a "Bullet Fan"

The installers were super efficient and polite to boot. They brought the tile in, did the lay out on the floor and after my inspection and approval, up it went in less than 2 hours. My fans really need to see my tile in person. There is talk that they may do another panel, so start looking for that “best image” of your own pet for a tribute or living memorial to them. I don’t often get too “excited” but this is awesome. (Special thanks to Deputies Cindy R., Deb P. & LC) for the great photos of the tile wall.) Also thanks for Deb P. for coordinating the Tile sales and to TILE ARTISANS  for this excellent product.

A new tentative date has been set for the “Grand Opening”/”Open House”. – What we had back in December was just the “Ribbon Cutting”. SUNDAY MARCH 29th, 2015 from 2-4pm is the date and time, pencil it in. It is the big event for all of my fans and the general public. I will keep you updated with details as I find them out. There is another planning meeting this week, so I hope to update you soon. If you are a Shelter Volunteer and want to help out with this please contact my awesome new friend, fan and Shelter Volunteer Coordinator, Deanna Chedsey call her at 530-621-7661 or email her at She works part time so give her a bit to get back to you. If you would like to become a volunteer at the shelter she is your go to person as well.

Hey, I just remembered that it is almost spring and with that we have “KITTEN SEASON”. Yet it’s the time of year when I get only a minimal amount of “handsome sleep” due to all the necessary training that goes into the little Tykes. You can help me get more quality nap time by signing up to be a foster parent for cats, kittens, dog and or puppies. You can find out more on the El Dorado County Animal Services Website

Thats all for me today, the nap zone calls.

CUTTING RIBBONS – officially

IMG_5048w2Well we are all official down here at the NEW El Dorado County West Slope Animal Shelter. On Wednesday, December 10th all the major players, in the construction of “my new place”, converged on the lobby and strung up a large red ribbon across the path of my visitors. I was assured that it was only temporary and that after some speeches and the like it would be cut in half and removed. It would signal that we are now officially open. I read up on the internet after the event and found that this is one of those necessary human formality things. As long as these things bring me new fans and head pats I am good with it.IMG_5176mbestw

As you can see from the photos I provided supervision through most of the event and allowed the attendees to visit with the little tykes in the cat adoption room.

Thanks are in order for the cool dog shaped flower arrangement is from Flowers on Main in Placerville and the nifty animal and paw shaped cookies are from Sugar Lillie Bakery in the town of El Dorado.

There was also a slide show of the whole shelter construction process running on the lobby monitor – a thank you is in order to all my deputies for providing photographs for this. (Alli, Janice, Donna, Lisa & Barb L).

The administrators are telling me that there will be another event for my fans this coming spring. They are not sure if they are calling it a grand opening or an open house. Either way plan on coming in to visit me then. But you can also stop by any time to see me at the new shelter – 6435 Capitol Ave. in Diamond Springs.IMG_4535w

One last note for this post is that a New Shelter Volunteer Coordinator has been hired. They will be taking over the role that PAWED has been providing of organizing and tracking the shelter volunteers. More on this in my next blog.

And finally I just wanted to wish you all a Happy Holiday. – MEOWZA BULLET

More accolades for“Deputy” Jeff, who also got our photography backdrop in the Cat Meet N Greet Room up and running so my other deputies can properly showcase the adoptables on the West Slope and to make sure I have a proper picture portfolio to submit for those upcoming movie roles. (More on this around Christmas) He did a bang up job anchoring this stuff to the metal stud work, without damaging the beautiful new walls.

Finnegan has been adopted.

Eliza has been adopted. Check out the Fall season decoration and celebrate her adoption.

If you have been watching on the PAWED or Animal Services Facebook pages you’ll notice its all set up for the Harvest season. Soon you will see it all decked out for the Holiday Season. AND … if you stop by to play with my lady friends, canine buddies and the little kitty tykes here at the shelter you can check them all out by just having a seat in the lobby and watching the monitor there. “Pretty cat darn cool,” I would say. Plus you can visit with me at the same time. I pretty much supervise the Lobby area just like at the old shelter.

Drop-by while your out doing your holiday shopping to say hello and give me a head or chin scratch and maybe visit with some of the other residents before they move on to their forever homes.

I hear I have a photo session coming up again pretty soon so I gotta head off and get some more quality Handsome napping done. — Meowza, Bullet.

In addition to MYSPACE in the Volunteer room, the in-house Veterinary Clinic has gone in. A generous donor combined their funds with the equipment repurposed from the “dying” PAWED Mobile Clinic to create an awesome space in the building here at 6435 Capitol Avenue in Diamond Springs. (Yes if you had not heard we moved to our new location in October, and its really cool.) This is great as the space is bigger and staff are not tripping over one and other and the animals to

A super big MEOWZA goes out to lead fixit and fix everything guy “Deputy” Jeff Lee. He runs the

volunteer crew (Donna D., Bill Smith et al. pretty hard though, and they have even had to resort to weight training to keep up and they will hopefully be able to get some much needed rest for muscles and backs now that the majority of it is done and debugged.

It has been a pretty massive project to extract and adapt equipment from the Mobile Clinic and get it up and running in the new space. Check out this great gallery of photos by “Deputy” Donna that shows all the new equipment purchased through the PAWED Finishing Touches campaign and repurposing the Mobile Clinic equipment. They tell me that removing that decal was super tedious work with a heat gun and progress measured in millimeters per hour – it took a really long time to remove.

Anyway this new space is super duper and will serve our community for decades to come.

Volunteer Room - MYSPACE

Volunteer Room – MYSPACE

While I have been working on my Handsome sleep, a lot was going on here at the New Animal Services Facility on the West Slope of El Dorado County. The nice people of PAWED are setting me up with some proper digs right next to the lobby. I had to interrupt my quality nap time to do inspections and make sure everything was just right. I think its pretty close now, what do you think?

Bullet's Inspection reveals inadequate napping area at first.

My inspection reveals inadequate napping area at first.

Note the key features of “MYSPACE”*

  • good napping spot within reach of volunteers working at the computer station for routine head pats
  • computer station readily available for my research needs
  • easy accessibility of the lobby so I can supervise
  • private lavatory facility
  • appropriate animal theme décor
  • constant availability of food and water
  • ability to accommodate multiple fans at one time

A quick note to all my fans. New shelter GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, January 25, 2015. There is no celebration here at the new shelter tomorrow (Saturday, November 15th, 2014). The county had to make allowances for me as I am still catching up on my Handsome Sleep. Sorry, but it really needs to be a first rate proper celebration and the move really was more taxing than I thought. I can tell you my deputies have been busy getting pictures which I will share soon along with some stories. Although the big celebration is a ways off, feel free to come in and give me a pat on the head and visit or adopt one of our shelter residents.

HOME SWEET HOME – Time to nap

EDCASsign 5x4wYippeee!  Yippeeee! Yipeee! WE’VE MOVED IN, we’ve moved in. — OK sorry I am a bit giddy and over tired and even perhaps a bit confused from no sleep, the car ride and anxiety that my fans might not know where to find me. First things first. Me, shelter staff, Animal Services officers, the director and even the administrative staff are in our new home 6435 Capitol Ave. in Diamond Springs. First is was all the chaos of the King Fire and then all the staff and volunteers with their packing and cleaning and moving activities that have totally disrupted my “Handsome Sleep.” They even had to deliberately wake me up on several occasions to ask my advise about where to put some of the items. Anyway it was incredibly exhausting but as you canIMG_3580w see they found me a suitable napping spot at the front desk so I can greet my fans. We open in the morning. That will be THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16th at 9:30am. Check the El Dorado County Animal Services Website for the shelter and administrative hours (I hear tell will be open at lunch now so my fans can stop by on their lunch hour.) and other details.

The grand opening has yet to be announced and things are still being completed around here but you can stop in and take a look at the lobby and give me a couple of nice head pats starting on the 16th.

I am a bit disappointed that there are not too many dogs in here yet and the barn is not quite ready for those horse types I will need to train but its all looking pretty good. Outside perimeter fencing is just beginning to go up but the walkway to visit me is in and today’s sky was a lovely blue.IMG_3579w

Inside Alli and Sara are putting up shelving and filling it with blankets and towels to keep all of my friends and me comfortable. There seems to be a room, a cupboard or nook or cranny for about everything. Tuesday the veterinary clinic and grooming equipment started to arrive. Two of the cool cat towers are already here along with some incredibly confusing kitten triplets that I cannot for the life of me tell apart.

Two of the triplets.

Two of the triplets.

After getting the volunteer computer up and running, one of my deputies (Deputy Donna) almost scared the little tykes to death making funny faces. The kittens not the deputy should be in next week’s Adopt A Pet Ad in the Mountain Democrat. PAWED volunteers were greeting people at the door this week so I could get some sleep. It will take staff and I a while to sort out everything here at the new place so please bear with us as we get all the kinks out and as I catch up on my sleep.

Deputy Donna playing with the kittens.

I hope you will all be as pleased and excited as I am to see this huge undertaking and milestone for Animal Services become a reality. That’s it until I am more rested. Meowza! – Bullet
